Unit 8 : FMP
Candidate Declaration - I confirm that the attached portfolio is all my own work* and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself
Task 1 : Analysis
Identify and explain each of the important elements that must be considered during the production of a Short film.
During the production of my Documentary, some of the important elements were the Cinematography, Research, Audio, Lighting, Editing Process, Planning. All of these will allow me to make an end result worth waiting for.
Cinematography is important to the production because the look of the visuals is really important, by changing colours and tones throughout a documentary will allow the viewers to get different perceptions and feelings based off this one element, everything coherently works together to make a piece that is really pleasing to watch with a nice clear story that allows the viewer to feel connected to the documentary.
Me and Harry (My teammate) will fulfil this element by using some high end equipment and also having a good understanding of the equipment itself, this will allow us to get the most out of the equipment and make our shots look like they were shot on a much more expensive camera because we have the understanding and knowledge on how to use the equipment properly.
Research is important to the production because we want to provide Facts & Details which are correct and up to date. This means no one can say we haven't got the right information as we have properly researched the topics well and made sure we are prepared, this also means we have a good understanding on the Documentary so we can feel the passion and make a more immersive Documentary so those who watch will understand it.
Me and Harry will fulfil this element by making documents (research) that cover any topics that we might need to use or understand better. This will allow us to make a more detailed documentary allowing us to gain access to the higher grades.
Audio is important to the production because we want to have the highest possible audio quality for our production, thus meaning people would watch for longer as it is pleasing to listen to as well as visually look at too. The audio is the other big main piece to making a Documentary as it allows us to set the scene accordingly and also provides a really high end result.
Me and Harry will fulfil this element by using really good high quality microphones and dampening sound echo within the spaces we are filming. This in return should make our audio sound perfect, minimal background noise and crystal clear audio will mean the viewers stay for longer as they are more obliged to stay with it having a high production value.
Lighting is important to the production because we want to have nice soft lighting and good backlighting as well as practical lighting. This will help with the cinematography as it provides depth and colour to the image showing the depth of field.
Me and Harry will fulfil this element by using the 3 different light effects Practical lighting, Backlight, Key light. By using these techniques we will add more production value to the documentary.
Editing Process is important for our for the production because we want to make sure it is edited properly and all coherently works together properly without it looking like a college made production.
Me and Harry will fulfil this element by
Task 2 : Research
Conduct research, using a range of different research methods into the content and visual style of your short film.
Content research was completed and created within the first few lessons working on the FMP project, the google drive link below will show on a document our content research that was conducted. This includes links to videos we would like to use in the final edit as well as life information on Andy Campbell (our subject for this documentary).
THIS IS THE GROUP CONTENT RESEARCH DOCUMENT -> Google Drive Document
Visual research was also completed along side the green light pitch, this document was made as we had a really good understanding of what we wanted from the visual aspect of this production. It was our highest priority that the visuals were really nice as it would make or break the production. Below you can take a look at our research made on the visual side of things.
Topics Discussed in our piece were a range of football stats and info, this is because we wanted it to be a dedicated football documentary but we wanted it to be done in a way that was informative to the viewer but also interesting. The topics discussed will be on the google drive link below, this is a more in depth research document we created before pre production went intro full swing.
Greenlight Pitch was completed to a high level of detail discussing the most important elements to our group and production. This is because we focused heavily on the visual and cinematic style so it looked visually pleasing to the viewers. To look at our green light pitch document open the google drive link and take a look.
Task 3 : Planning
Produce a detailed pre-production document to support your production. This should include elements such as a script, shot list, storyboard, mood boards, risk assessments.
For our pre-production we made it all with variations, these are ordered via numbers so it is easy to view and find, we spent roughly 3 weeks on this pre-production phase as we were waiting to hear back from Andy to give us a date on filming, so we decided to make detailed pre-production documents instead and focus on planning the production days so we could maximise the time we have with Andy as he is a very busy individual and we only had a set amount of time, so by completing all this pre-production it helped us as we were extremely organised and prepared for anything that might happen on set. To view our pre-production documentation with variations please click on the google drive link to see the entire folder with all documentation in.
Task 4 : Production
Engage in a production process for your short film.
For our production we had 5 different locations planned but unfortunately we could only use 3 of those locations as the two we wanted to use weren't available for the time we had Andy so we improvised on the day before and got planning to make sure we could facilitate the locations all in one day, we had him for 1 hour and 30 minutes and we had to film a whole documentary worth max 10 minutes so we decided to get cracking as soon as he arrived to my office to do the studio elements in it then move to the park and discuss some things there while doing bits to camera then moving finally onto the Middlesbrough Football Stadium where Andy would discuss how he feels to be back and revisit his old place where he would play and spend the majority of the time.
During the production stage we also thought that we might not get to film with Andy as he was busy, i touch more on this in the evaluation but there was a point where we thought we might not be able to film with him and that we might need to get something else planned, so we had a huge setback. However this didn't happen and we were still all good to go.
Ensure you have completed a detailed production diary that covers Pre-Production, Production, Post Production.
Edit together your film.
Editing took 26 hours over the course of 4 days, i mainly edited the documentary with the help of Harry on a meeting video call.

Task 5 : Evaluation
Create a detailed evaluation that discusses both the filming process and your final film. Focus primarily on how your planning and design translated into your final piece.
Our Filming went well overall, we just had limited time to film so we were checking the time a lot and making sure we were sticking to the time we had been allocated, this is really important as if we hadn't done this we would have not got what we needed to done. We had 1 hour and 30 minutes to film with Andy, this meant cutting out some of the middle where he would visit his mum and revisit old memories of him playing football when he was young but unfortunately this time limit meant we couldn't facilitate this so therefore we had to cut it out.
However we did manage to get a lot filmed, and hopefully we can get a good documentary. There will be a lot of post production visuals added afterwards as this is needed in case we didn't get enough filmed. In the edit there will be additional video that was filmed while we were on set to use while Andy is speaking in the documentary where we can cut to that while showing b-roll we got while on set.
In terms of our planning and design they were completed really well and on paper with perfect conditions it would have worked fantastically, however it didn't, the time we had was limited so that caused a setback, if we had longer to film the whole thing would have been done to our planned specification, so the planning was great we just didn't bargain for the fact Andy might not be available after agreeing to do the documentary as that's why we asked him 5 weeks beforehand so he would have ample time to put it in his diary and keep open space. However in the end we got to film with him and make something unique, most college films wont have a local icon in their films so that alone is a huge achievement and advantage so it was worth having the stress of organising the dates and times within a day before filming, the end result is great and i'm really happy with it, minor changes if i had more time but for the time given i think it is a solid attempt and creation.
Discuss what went well and how you would like to improve on the next production and set a specific target.
What went well :
The filming itself went really well in terms of the visual side as even though we had less time we didn't want to cut out on the production value. The visual side is more than adequate for this production as we took attention to detail. The questions asked were good, we had some amazing responses as well which we can use as voiceovers to other thing filmed like b-roll and any clips & images we might have from online.
How would I like to improve on my next production :
For my next production I'd like to improve on the planning aspect of it and have a more structured and confirmed timetable with dates and times with crew & cast to double lock down on any potential unavailability and what we can do if so. This is because i felt like there was things that could have been in place but it was just difficult as we were using real people who had actual jobs and real things to do so therefore we had to be on their time as opposed the other way round like if i used actors i could tell them what to do, but with the availability of the subject we had to be open to change in exchange to get a documentary as we knew it would look great so it was a good risk taken.
Set a specific target to guide your own development :
A target I'd like to set myself is making sure all pre-production documentation has clear cut variations and is numbered accordingly, I did do this for this production but here and there it was unorganised but after the first few days we got the hang of it so I'd definitely like to carry this over to the following productions as it's something that is valuable.
What i did for other production teams :
I helped Robert & Alfie make their pre-production documents by providing them with templates and knowledge on how to make the document itself. I also helped them setup their lighting and camera shots as well as set dressing. I spent a few hours in between pre-production on my documentary to help them with the various tasks.
