Unit 9 : Music Video Production

Task 1 : Research

What is a music video?

A music video is a production of a piece of music that is brought to life through the camera, the artist can choose to show a story through this video as well as within the song itself. Meaning it can have a bigger impact to the viewer and maybe making a relatable situation through the video linked to the song like having life issues.

What are the 5 main categories of music video?

Performance - The band on the stage with cameras filming them play.

Narrative - The artist telling a story through the music video.

Concept - This has no storyline or relevance to the lyrics, you can either pick Thematic or Symbolic.

Lyric - A music video with music lyrics on the video with nothing else, can be creative text pop-ups.

Animated - An animated music video is just an animated video with any of the above choices along with it. Example Animated & narrative this allows an animated story telling through the music video.

All "Unique Features" are displayed next to the category above.

Class Task:

Example music video and consider each key element.

Explain the purpose/impact of each element.

What are the key elements :

-Lyrics: Key lines included in the music video are “not going to be cooking all day” which matches the music video as she gives some food to the man, and she’s fed up. The impact of this is it leaves the music video with a quote for people to remember and understand
so it sticks with them

-Music: The tempo matches the music video, it’s fast and switches camera angles quickly. The impact of this is that the viewer keeps watching as it's constantly changing and keeping the viewer interested.

-Genre: Set in 1960’s because of the old TV screen & Costumes. The impact of this is to make the viewer understand that this is set in the 60's and this is the timeframe of when mistreatment would occur in the households for the reasons stated in the music video.

-Camera work: The camera work is slow which shows she’s tired, this matches the tone. The impact of this is to show how her mood changes and makes the viewer feel it too through the audio and visual side of the video.

-Editing: Focusing on different scenarios and showing what’s going on, mistreatment this is to show that it needs to be stopped. The impact of this is the viewer can be shown things as in editing they can add in a specific focal point to direct the attention to a matter.

-Narrative: The point of view is a housewife getting fed up with her husband coming home demanding food on the table and a clean house, and she’s fed up of getting treated badly (mistreated) by her husband in the music video. The impact of the narrative is to really show the extent of what is happening within the households in the 1960's.

Comparing Two Music Video Styles

Performance Vs Narrative, The similarities and colorations between the two are fairly slim but there are some links between the two. They both have the artist within the music video and they both have people incorporated into the music video doing something. Performance you have the band doing the live playlist of the song and in Narrative they have someone doing something to tell a story or they'll have the artist play this role. More commonly the unrelated things between the two are far more apparent. For example, Performance you have the band in one location and stationary while seeing them sing along to the lyrics. However Narrative is more than one location and the camera shots move throughout the duration of the music video with no lip syncing or lyrics but the artist can go against this as there isn't a rule for this but the artist can lip sync if they want its all subjective. The impact these will have on the audience is that someone might feel a sense of relation to the Narrative music video more than the performance as its just a video of the band making the music whereas the narrative music video might give the audience / person feelings or memories they can relate to via the projection of the music video creation. Subtle things like locations or life events within music videos can help people not feel alone with certain things like having issues with friends or something and the music video is about that and it then gives the listener something to relate to. Through the visuals of the camera the audience can

Task 2 : Design

Find one music video that you would like to take inspiration from and explain why/which elements of the video inspired you.

A music video that I have taken inspiration from is Central Cee x Dave - Sprinter the reason I have chosen this is because the cinematography is really good, this goes within the Camera Work element meaning that I will try to replicate the cinematography in my own music video.

Find 3 potential song choices that you are interested in turning into a music video.

    1) Skyfall - Adele : This has a really grand opening to the song and it makes for a great intro to a character / person.

    2) Back to Back - Drake : This song has a really good flow to it and its something different pushing me to make something that I'm not used to which could allow me to get really creative.

    3) Wat u Want 2 - Yeat unreleased : This song is also really different and unique and something I wouldn't normally make a video with allowing me to potentially get really creative with and work with people I don't normally either.

Narrowing down the songs for the group music project:

The 3 available songs are :

        1) Skyfall - Adele / Have some sort of person in a suit living a luxurious lifestyle while the song plays out.

        2) Back to Back - Drake / Have someone dress up like a rapper and we'll incorporate some fisheye shots into it like 90's rap and have them rap to the song while doing various things.

        3) Wat u Want 2 - Yeat unreleased / Have an up to date version of 90's rap but it'll be a more design focused task as it will be heavily fabricated to look like the old backstreets and have some slightly more gangster vibe to it and crime looking.

My main choice to suggest to the group is Back to Back - Drake / Have someone dress up like a rapper and we'll incorporate some fisheye shots into it like 90's rap and have them rap to the song while doing various things. This is because i think it will be a really fun task to do and it wont require a great deal of planning either so it wont be heavily time consuming.

My idea changed from Back to Back by Drake to HUMBLE. by Kendrick Lamar then to my final pitch of Skyfall by Adele. So i presented my final idea in the form of a greenlight pitch, i will include below all three greenlight pitches but Skyfall by Adele was my main idea and the one i pitched.

My idea was good but it just required a lot of work and external locations and with not a lot of time it didn't make sense to overwork for this as it might not have worked as it was a risky idea initially to go for something as ambitious.

All greenlight pitches above have Target Audiences and research on who the music video would be for.

We collectively decided that we should do Grayson's idea, so we did. Below is Grayson's Greenlight pitch for the actual Music Video Greenlight Pitch. The reason we picked this is because we wanted the 1st year to have a full experience of film & tv within the first task, but the idea was also really good so that was the main reason we picked Grayson's idea.

Throughout our production we had a production diary, this is just one document going through our various dates we did things and made significant changes to the production.

Other people's ideas within the group:

Alfie:

Greenlight Pitch : Google Slides

We really liked Alfie's idea however we decided not to pick Alfie's idea as it was going to be a big reach and a lot to do in a short space of time. Plus it required a lot of actors and effort to get the idea going.

Hollie:

Greenlight Pitch: Google Slides

We thought Hollies idea was great however we decided not to pick Hollie's idea as there was a lot of external locations and there wasn't a really clear through line to go throughout the whole video so it wouldn't have made sense. However if we had more time to develop the idea more initially then we would have picked this but because of the time crunch we went with Grayson's.

Task 3 : Planning

Throughout the pre-production phase (planning) i had all the team members join a group google drive folder so all our work for the music video production was in one place and everything was organised from start to finish. To view all the pre-production we have done please click the link below showing our documentation throughout the process.

Task 4 : Production

During the production i was unfortunately unwell, so i missed the last day of production but i was there for the first day of production doing lighting & set design with the team to help get everything setup and looking professional for the shoot.

My edit of the music video is attached below, we all had to make one edit each making a total of 4 edits.

Editing Production Diary:

This took me roughly 4-5 hours to do a base edit and 1 hour for colour and sound to ensure everything linked up correctly. Overall I am really happy with this piece I have edited. I had to slow down and cut certain parts of the music video to accommodate the footage we got, so for example I have made a sequence that plays every time the chorus comes on as i didn't have enough footage to use so I compromised.

Task 5 : Evaluation

During the Production of the music video we as a team were really organised as I made sure everyone was sticking to tasks they had been given and that all the work was put into the group google drive folder. In doing this all our work was much more organised and productive, we weren't asking each other for files as we could just go into the folder and find it ourselves which made things easier and quicker. This made the end result super easy to film and really streamlined as the work we had done was organised too. All the design came in useful too as we weren't worrying about what people were wearing or what they would have as we had picked out and designed the Set, Costumes & Props.

In relation to the final film, the edit is much better than I expected to produce as I didn't think I would be able to edit the music video this well, however I am really pleased with the outcome and it looks really good visually too. The edit roughly took 5 hours or so with 4 of them being base editing and organisation, and 1 hour spent colour grading and sound.

All our pre-production went well as I had divided all the tasks across the team with similarity in difficulty so no one had an "easier'' task as they were all the same in terms of responsibility and time consumption. This was a huge help for our team, another one was just making sure the team was on track and making sure everyone understood what needed to be done in terms of responsibilities. If I had to pick something to improve on for next time and set a specific target I'd have to say make the production diary the first priority and date it everyday and use a spreadsheet for it too or a document with a table so its a more organised document, so that's personally one of my targets that I will try and stick to for future productions.
