Unit 2 : Creating Suspense

Task 1 : Research

Unit Tasks

Compare the research methods that you chose to use, how successful they were and what impact they had on your film :

The research that our group conducted was using google and Wikipedia while creating word documents on the information we had discovered. This was easy and fast, it allowed us to get through more information faster than if we were to conduct our own research in person. This research was successful as everyone in our team got the research done quicker than anticipated leaving us with a little extra time to work on other things or perfecting the research that was conducted. All researching activities were done with a high level of standard and efficiency allowing the team to be as productive as possible during this time we took to research our Whitby trip and how to create suspense. While creating the suspense research we made sure to include all of our wants for the film like a chase scene and dramatic lighting, sound. This means we will be more engaged for the production the film while on set as there is elements of everyone's favourite things for horror films. While I researched the chase scene I was able to gain more knowledge on how to setup the chase scene and how long to make the sequence last for, you can see everyone’s research in the document above highlighted in orange. Google direct search was mostly ok for the answers we needed for the research but Wikipedia allowed us to gain more depth on the situation and understand it much better than google so we were able to conduct extensive research. Overall while doing my research I noticed that websites use different answers so it can be hard to find the genuine correct answer if it perhaps isn't available on Wikipedia like just a simple question, so I think google could implement a tool that has a verified correct answer that you can trust and that way you know it is genuinely correct because you don’t want to have incorrect research for anything as it could affect you or the team later on so we tried our best to use trusted sources and highly rated articles on the things we needed to find.

Discuss the difference between Primary and Secondary research and compare a range of sources and their impact om your work :

Primary research is a type of research that is conducted by yourself and generally this hasn’t been collected before you could do this through a survey, questionnaire or interview. Secondary research is research found from textbooks, news articles, online data sources this has already been researched so all you have to do is read and learn instead of conducting the whole operation. The sources that will be given to you when conducting research is really important, if you want qualitive data you conduct primary research as it can cost money as take up time however if you want quantitative data then chose secondary research as you can get more results for a cheaper price and less time but it may be in accurate and not relevant to your task. That’s where primary research will beat secondary research in all departments when it comes to accuracy and genuine responses that have been thought of. Secondary research is a good example of quick and fast research that will get the job done but may not follow your guidelines when it comes to precision. When conducting primary research it allows you to have a better understanding of the answer you will get from someone as you are the one who will listen back for the response so ultimately it’s how you interpret the interviewers response or look at the answers from the data sets. Secondary research will be useful and quick that will get some what right answers and will get the job done just as well as primary research all apart from the qualitive data responses.

OUR GROUP FILE OF RESEARCH FOR WHITBY :

Lesson 1:

The first lesson we focused on 3 point lighting and how it can change the look of  a scene by just using lighting.

3 Point Lighting :

Key lighting = Main source of light usually on angle to the left or right of camera

Fill lighting = This is a light that fills the opposite side of the subject where the key light isn't pointing at, this is usually no more than 50% of the Key lighting strength.

Back lighting = This light stays behind the subject to give depth away from the background so it doesn't look as flat on the image of the camera.

Practical lighting = This lighting is turned on in the background to add some extra lighting to make it more separated from the main subject and it also allows the additional use of adding extra colours in the background and colour temperature of light.

Lesson 2:

In lesson 2 we looked at :

Types of lighting = Frontal light, Sidelight, Backlight, Underlighting, Top lighting

Quality of lighting = Hard/Harsh light, Soft/Diffused light

Sources of lighting = High-key light, low-key light, key lighting, fill light, ( 3 Point Lighting )

Colour = Warm light, Cool light, White light, Coloured Light

Lighting Grid Examples :

We looked at different video examples of these different aspects above so we could identify and improve our knowledge on it :

We also created storyboards to create ideas for lighting and positioning to put the things we learnt into practise.

Task 2 : Design

Word Document with all info about what as been decided:

During the design period we had 3 ideas that we wanted to bring to life so we jotted notes down onto paper and whiteboards and thought as a group collectively and all decided via voting system on teams to pick out our final plan which we executed at Whitby, however there was adjustments made to that plan on set due to unforeseen weather changes and issues with equipment etc which were unfortunately delaying the filming hours to we compromised and made something which worked better for the circumstances. Plan 1 was to have figures appear out of the water and chase the friends but we decided not to do that as it would be very difficult to have someone floating for the chase scene and we left it out because it would have taken too long to film and edit, if we had longer we may have considered that one, Plan 2 consisted of friends being stalked by all the masked figures but then we couldn't decide on how the masked figures would be seen without it being obvious as it was supposed to be a suspense piece, So we decided on Plan 3 which was a friend leaving his room to meet up with his mates but then gets chased and then killed and then the 3 other masked figures join the main masked figure to come and kill the 3 other friends. This is how we made our plans work and this is also how we adjusted on the spot to fit our already existing plans with the changes that had to be made on set.

Task 5 : Evaluation

Evaluation on the filming process and final film :

The overall filming was a success, as a team we were able to work together without any issues, everyone had a go at different things on set, we also had really good time management as well as improvisation methods when things didn't go to plan like the torrential rain we had in the afternoon which rendered our chase scene impossible as it was all outside, but we came up with a compromise and filmed it inside the Hostel. We also had really good communication skills between the film crew via teams, unfortunately the actors had a lack of communication on our end and their end as they didn't check teams when we wanted them on set which meant we had to find them instead and use up some of the vital time we had in the Abby as it was closing 2 hours earlier than anticipated. We had all files on set with us at all times, Storyboard and shotlist ( Everything from Task 3 ). The shotlist and the other pieces of paperwork were really useful while on set as it allowed us to follow our plan without being clueless as to what we were doing, we were always checking the time and planning ahead preparing for rain or any other issues that may occur during the production of the film ( Jager ).

What went well and how to improve for next time :

While filming we had a lot of fun getting into the position of an actual film set, we took it very seriously and operated accordingly to look as professional as possible all the while having fun and enjoying the experience. Some things to improve on for the team was to assign a specific role to someone to always make sure we had actors at least 10 minutes before they were in front of the camera so they don't wander off and then we cant find them and have to stop filming because someone has decided they want to go for a coffee or a meal while we are supposed to be filming, this will help with the overall efficiency and allow more time for overshooting or reshooting while on set. Another improvement for the team would be to
