Unit 2 : Creating Suspense
Task 1 : Research
Unit Tasks
Primary research is a type of research that is conducted by yourself and generally this hasn’t been collected before you could do this through a survey, questionnaire or interview. Secondary research is research found from textbooks, news articles, online data sources this has already been researched so all you have to do is read and learn instead of conducting the whole operation. The sources that will be given to you when conducting research is really important, if you want qualitive data you conduct primary research as it can cost money as take up time however if you want quantitative data then chose secondary research as you can get more results for a cheaper price and less time but it may be in accurate and not relevant to your task. That’s where primary research will beat secondary research in all departments when it comes to accuracy and genuine responses that have been thought of. Secondary research is a good example of quick and fast research that will get the job done but may not follow your guidelines when it comes to precision. When conducting primary research it allows you to have a better understanding of the answer you will get from someone as you are the one who will listen back for the response so ultimately it’s how you interpret the interviewers response or look at the answers from the data sets. Secondary research will be useful and quick that will get some what right answers and will get the job done just as well as primary research all apart from the qualitive data responses.
OUR GROUP FILE OF RESEARCH FOR WHITBY :
Lesson 1:
The first lesson we focused on 3 point lighting and how it can change the look of a scene by just using lighting.
3 Point Lighting :
Key lighting = Main source of light usually on angle to the left or right of camera
Fill lighting = This is a light that fills the opposite side of the subject where the key light isn't pointing at, this is usually no more than 50% of the Key lighting strength.
Back lighting = This light stays behind the subject to give depth away from the background so it doesn't look as flat on the image of the camera.
Practical lighting = This lighting is turned on in the background to add some extra lighting to make it more separated from the main subject and it also allows the additional use of adding extra colours in the background and colour temperature of light.
Lesson 2:
In lesson 2 we looked at :
Types of lighting = Frontal light, Sidelight, Backlight, Underlighting, Top lighting
Quality of lighting = Hard/Harsh light, Soft/Diffused light
Sources of lighting = High-key light, low-key light, key lighting, fill light, ( 3 Point Lighting )
Colour = Warm light, Cool light, White light, Coloured Light
Lighting Grid Examples :
We looked at different video examples of these different aspects above so we could identify and improve our knowledge on it :
We also created storyboards to create ideas for lighting and positioning to put the things we learnt into practise.
Storyboard evidence from lesson work :
During the design period we had 3 ideas that we wanted to bring to life so we jotted notes down onto paper and whiteboards and thought as a group collectively and all decided via voting system on teams to pick out our final plan which we executed at Whitby, however there was adjustments made to that plan on set due to unforeseen weather changes and issues with equipment etc which were unfortunately delaying the filming hours to we compromised and made something which worked better for the circumstances. Plan 1 was to have figures appear out of the water and chase the friends but we decided not to do that as it would be very difficult to have someone floating for the chase scene and we left it out because it would have taken too long to film and edit, if we had longer we may have considered that one, Plan 2 consisted of friends being stalked by all the masked figures but then we couldn't decide on how the masked figures would be seen without it being obvious as it was supposed to be a suspense piece, So we decided on Plan 3 which was a friend leaving his room to meet up with his mates but then gets chased and then killed and then the 3 other masked figures join the main masked figure to come and kill the 3 other friends. This is how we made our plans work and this is also how we adjusted on the spot to fit our already existing plans with the changes that had to be made on set.
